Understanding cyberbullying
Below you will find a short video which is our first lesson on what cyberbullying is and how we can stay safe when online.
Lesson 1
Hello friends, and welcome to today’s lesson about cyberbullying and staying safe online.
Have you ever seen someone post a mean comment online, send a hurtful message, or leave someone out of a group chat?
That is called cyberbullying.
Cyberbullying happens when someone uses technology like phones, games, social media, or messaging apps to upset, embarrass, or hurt another person. Even though it happens online, it can still have serious effects on people’s feelings and wellbeing.
Cyberbullying can look like a few different things:
- sending mean messages,
- sharing embarrassing photos,
- spreading rumours online,
- or purposely excluding someone from online groups or games.
It’s important to remember that words online can hurt just as much as words said in person.
If you ever experience cyberbullying or see it happening to someone else, there are some important things you can do:
- don’t respond with more mean messages,
- save evidence like screenshots,
- block or report the person,
- and tell a trusted adult, teacher, or parent.
Being a responsible online means treating others with kindness and respect whenever we are online.
Throughout this lesson, you will learn how to recognise cyberbullying, understand how it affects others, and explore safe ways to respond in different online situations.
You’ll also complete an interactive activity where you can practise making safe and respectful choices online, followed by a short quiz to test your understanding.
Remember that the internet should be a safe and positive place for everyone.
Have fun exploring and remember its never ok to treat someone without kindness.
